Ice Sarunyu
Name: “Ice” Sarunyu Winaipanit (ไอซ์ ศรัณยู วินัยพานิช)
Birthdate: September 12, 1984
Label: GMM Grammy
Ice was born in Chinat, Thailand, and has one older brother and one older sister, graduating from Srinakharinwirot University with a degree in performance arts in 2005.
Ice first broke into the entertainment industry by starting off as a radio and TV personality host for 93.5 EFM, however it wasn’t until he won one of Thailand’s many reality singing contest shows, First Stage Show, in 2003, that he finally caught the public’s eye. His first single, “คนมันรัก / Kon Mun Ruk (A Person Who Loves),” was an instant hit. After that, he sang singles for many of GMM Grammy’s compilation albums, and finally was granted his very first self-titled solo album in 2006, along with a major supporting role in the lakorn ด้วยแรงแห่งรัก (Duay Raeng Haeng Ruk), for which he sang the ending song, “กลับมาได้ไหม / Glup Mah Dai Mai (Please Come Back).”
Following his boom in popularity, Ice was selected to take part in a cultural exchange with Japan. He took an intensive crash course in Japanese, made a Japanese cover of his Thai hit “คนใจง่าย / Kon Jai Ngai (Soft-Hearted Person),” released a Japanese version of his self-titled debut album, and was instantly loved and adored. Japanese fans gave him the nickname “Prince of Smiles” for the broad grin he always wore at all concerts and events.
In 2008, he teamed up with fellow Grammy singers Peck Palitchoke and Aof Pongsak for a special project album entitled “Together,” and continued his climb to fame through each of his 5 studio albums. To this day, Ice can be considered one of Thailand’s most popular contemporary artists, is still releasing singles that always make the top 20 music charts, and is loved by a wide variety of generations and cultures.
I’ve seen Ice in concert many times, and I can say that the thing I admire most about him is his absolute dedication to his performance. He never lipsyncs. Even if he’s got a cold so bad with a sore throat and his nose all stuffed up, he will get on that stage, sing his heart out, then apologize with tears in his eyes for being sick and not being able to give his fans the best show he wanted to. He just refuses to use recordings or lipsyncing, which I really respect. On top of that, he’s got infectious energy, wonderful charisma, and is so humble and loving to his fanclub. Not only is he talented, but he’s one of the nicest artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, plus he’s super cute to boot, so he’s just the perfect package~
Ice has such strong pure vocal talent, he’s got such a great voice for R&B, ballads, pop, pop-rock, or even a little modern look-thoong, so if you’re a fan of any of those genres, definitely check him out. And if you’re a fan of Ice, if you ever get the chance to see him live, don’t miss out!! He really is an incredible entertainer.
